Rodney A. Moose "Ozhaawashkobines," 53, of Duluth, formerly of Sawyer, died Saturday, April 14, 2007, in Duluth. He was born May 31, 1953, in Cloquet to William and Isabelle Moose. He grew up in Sawyer and graduated from Carlton High School. Rodney was a member of the Mille Lacs Band of the Chippewa and was very active in the American Indian Movement.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orrin "Oscar" and LeRoy "Dennis"; and one nephew, LeRoy Moose.
He is survived by his daughter, Shawn Gainey of Duluth; son, Dana of Cloquet; their mother, Rochelle Martineau of Cloquet; step-sons, Steven Petite and Michael Kintner, both of Cloquet; one step-daughter, Tammy (Lee) DeFoe of Cloquet; five grandchildren and 18 grandchildren; five nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Sawyer Center until the Traditional Native Ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 19, also in the Sawyer Center. Burial will be in Sts. Mary and Joseph Cemetery in Sawyer.
