After graduation from Cloquet High School in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was united in marriage to Janice Myrmel on Sept. 10, 1955, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. After returning home, Bob joined the Cloquet Army National Guard and retired from there with 20 years of service. He devoted his life to veterans. Bob was a life member of the Cloquet American Legion Post 262 and was currently the post commander, an office he held 11 times. He was also a past 8th District Legion commander in 1979-1980. One of his favorite projects was helping sponsor an annual fishing trip to "Veterans On The Lake" in Ely for disabled veterans from the St. Cloud Veterans Hospital. Bob and Jan had many great years together traveling from Alaska to Mexico and spending time in Florida in the winter. He especially liked going to the family campground in Grand Rapids and fishing in the lake whenever there. Bob also enjoyed deer hunting at the hunting shack. One of his prides was his mounted moose head rack on his basement stairway. After waiting for many years for a permit, he got one in 2003. Bob retired from Potlatch Corporation after 42 years of service. He was also a lifelong member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and enjoyed attending daily mass during his failing health.
