Reynold A. "Bud" Olson, 73, of Chub Lake in Carlton passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his wife of over 50 years by his side. He died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. Bud was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Blackhoof, Minn., to Verner and Gerda (Anderson) Olson and graduated from Carlton High School. He was united in marriage to Lois Lindberg on Aug. 25, 1956, in Carlton. Bud worked for Potlatch Corporation for over 40 years after working for the Minnesota Fish and Game Department and also the Great Northern Railroad. He was baptized and confirmed at Elim Lutheran Church in Blackhoof. Bud was a longtime member, elder and trustee of J.M. Paine Memorial Presbyterian Church in Carlton and a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club. He was a gentle, kind man with a love of family, friends, sports (especially the Carlton Bulldogs), and his fishing and hunting on his 40 acres in Blackhoof and the Blackhoof River. Bud was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was greatly adored.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Donald; nephews Michael Goad, Donnie Olson and Dale Goad; and two brother-in-laws, Howard Chapin and Clifford Goad.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; two daughters, Connie Olson of Cloquet and Carrie (Steven Anderson) Olson-Anderson of Blackhoof; two sons, Brian Olson of Mounds View, Minn., and Chad "Big Dog" Olson of Carlton; two sisters, Violet Goad of Wrenshall and Irene Chapin of Blackhoof; two brothers, Roy (Barb) Olson of Blackhoof and Kenneth (Judy) Olson of Carlton; sister-in-law, Fay Olson of Cloquet; six grandchildren, Troy (Crystle) Olson of Pipestone, Minn., Brianna (Dann) Matthews of Superior, Wis., Abigail (Steven) Rautio of Duluth, Danielle Anderson of Duluth, and Jacob and Stephanie Anderson of Blackhoof; seven great-grandchildren, Spencer, Samantha, Loki, Shelbi, Araia, Anikki, and Skyler and a large loving family.
Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 13, at J.M. Paine Memorial Presbyterian Church in Carlton, officiated by the Rev. Loren Nelson. Music was provided by Nancie Paulson as soloist and Kaye Manty as organist. Pallbearers were Troy Olson, Steven Anderson, Patricia Lane, Paula Hagenah, Kent Olson, Gordon Chapin, Bruce Gerlach and Gregory Chapin. Honorary pallbearers are Roy Olson, Kenneth Olson, Brianna and Dann Matthews, Abigail and Steven Rautio, Stephanie Anderson, Jacob Anderson, Danielle Anderson, Crystle Olson, Pamela Snider, Lt. Col. Terrance Sunnarborg, Einar Nygren, Richard Nygren, Dr. Stephen Olson, D.D.S., Darrel Goad, Thomas VanGuilder, Charles Beck and Fred Houle. The visitation resumed Saturday, April 14, from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service, also at J.M. Paine Memorial Presbyterian Church. Spring interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Carlton.
