The Moose Lake-Willow River golf program is going through a growth spurt. Over 20 boys played for the team this season and the girls had at least eight on their roster - giving them enough to qualify as a full-fledged team.

"We haven't always had that for the girls," assistant coach Deb Indihar said. "So this season was nice."

Five girls qualified for sections, including senior Jody Staebler, who consistently posted the best scores throughout the season.

Freshman Jacob Indihar stood out on the boys side, qualifying for sections and placing third in the Polar League standings. Another freshman, Jake Cisar, also advanced to the section competition and junior Nick Dougherty's play was worth noting, Indihar said.

Although no one made it to state, Indihar is optimistic about the next few years.

"Most of our seniors this year were new to the sport," she said. "It will be fun to watch these talented younger kids move up - they are our future."
