Public hearing on Shamrock landfill changes set for Tuesday

The Cloquet Planning Commission will hold a public hearing during its 7 p.m. regular meeting Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the Council Chambers at Cloquet City Hall, 1307 Cloquet Ave.

The commission will hear arguments for and against a request from Shamrock Landfill to alter its conditional use permit to increase operating hours to seven days a week and remove the limit of paper sludge waste allowed in the Heavy Industry District.

The 42-acre industrial landfill - which lies in a large pit that also home to a gravel pit and lumber storage yard between Interstate 35 and the Hilltop soccer fields - was approved by the Cloquet City Council in 2011 after nearly a year of fierce debate between neighbors, the then-landfill owners and city officials.

The conditional use permit passed in 2011 had 20 different conditions attached to it, among them regulations regarding hours of operation (which have been amended since then) and how much paper sludge could be used.
