Many business owners and employees in the Cloquet area are receiving calling cards - from police.

Starting about two weeks ago, Cloquet patrol officers who check area businesses to make sure they're safe, are leaving a card under the door to let people know they were there and that their business is secure.

"Officers have routinely checked on businesses, mostly during night shifts," explained Cloquet Police Chief Wade Lamirande. "Sergeant Erik Blesener came across the cards and kudos to him. It's a good way to let people know their business has been surveyed by police and that it's secure."

Lamirande said police have been getting calls about the cards and he wants people to know they simply mean a business has been found to be safe during a routine check.

During a check on a business, an officer will shine lights on the building and in windows and test doors and windows for security. The cards they currently use are generic and Lamirande plans to order Cloquet Police-specific ones to lessen any confusion.

Additionally, in the coming weeks, Cloquet businesses will receive letters from police, asking for address confirmation and contact information.
