The 2020 EMS Person of the Year for Carlton County is Andrea Peterson, an EMT at Mercy Hospital.
A letter nominating Peterson for the honor said her training savvy has helped keep the department up to date with dealing with medical emergencies and she is an underutilized asset.
The award was one of several handed out by the Carlton County EMS Association Monday, Feb. 24 at the Carlton County Board of Commissioners meeting.
Association President Steve Trenhaile said nominations were accepted from various Carlton County Emergency services such as fire departments, hospitals, the Carlton County Sheriff's Department and more.
“Each year as we have done for at least 20 years, we nominate and award deserving members from our various emergency agencies to recognize the effort and dedication they give their communities,” Trenhaile said.

The Unit of the Year is the Carlton County Sheriff's Department. They were nominated by Captain Paige Robinson of the Esko Fire Department. Robinson said that deputies always support the volunteer firefighters at scenes.
“The deputies of CCSO are either the first ones on scene or right behind us on calls,” Robinson wrote. “They may be the first ones to administer Narcan on overdoses or start CPR on cardiac arrest patients.”
The Friends of EMS Award went to Highway 210 Auto for supplying vehicles for local fire departments and other emergency responders to train for emergencies.
Mike Peterson was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement in EMS Award. Peterson has spent 36 years total between Carlton County EMS and Cromwell-Wright Area Fire District.
During that time, he facilitated the merger of the Cromwell Fire and Ambulance and the Wright Fire Department, and helped draft legislation that streamlines the merging of fire relief associations.
Furthermore, Peterson helped with joint powers agreements to make it easier to form fire districts.
Although Peterson has officially retired, he continues to be a resource for the organizations.
