Carlton County Attorney Thomas Pertler was not among the finalists selected to become Northeastern Minnesota's next judge.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced Friday that assistant St. Louis County attorneys Gary Bjorklund and Dale Harris and Duluth private practice attorney Michael Lien remain under consideration to fill the 6th Judicial District vacancy created when Gerald Martin retired as the district's senior judge on Oct. 1.

Seven lawyers applied for the position. Pawlenty accepted the recommendations of the Commission on Judicial Selection in naming the finalists.

This was Pertler's third attempt at appointment to the 6th Judicial District trial court bench following unsuccessful attempts in 2007 and 2008. Pertler was a finalist for both of the previous positions on the bench.

Pertler has held his current position as Carlton County attorney since 2005.

"I thoroughly love my [current] job, so I would not be upset if I don't get picked," Pertler attested last week.
