A 55-year-old man walking on Highway 33 in Cloquet was fatally injured when he was struck by a semi at approximately 2:47 a.m. Thursday morning.

Minnesota State Patrol Captain Steve Strombeck said officers believe the semi struck Eugene Sam, 55, of Duluth, in the left lane of Northbound Highway 33, about a quarter mile from the entrance to Walmart on Gillette Road. Strombeck said they have not determined if Sam was walking across the highway or along the highway. He was not in the crosswalk.

State Patrol say they've ruled out alcohol on the part of the semi driver, Shawn Anderson, 36 of Bertha, Minn.

They are awaiting autopsy and blood sample results for the deceased man.

"We still have investigation to do before we lay the final contributing factors," Strombeck said Thursday afternoon.
