The Ninth Annual PBS eight High School Essay, Art and Photography Contests had another amazing year that demonstrates the kills of our area youth and the success of our Northland schools.

Some 622 essays were submitted by students from 18 area high schools in this year's contest. The semifinalists are the top 10 percent of the entries and the finalists are the top 25 entries in the contest. Some 236 entries in the art and photography contest (a new record) were submitted by students from 20 area high schools.

The winners of each of the three contests will be announced and awarded cash scholarships ($1,000, $500, $250, and $100 for each of the contests) at the gala opening of the PBS eight High School Art & Photography Exhibit at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Manion Theater in the Holden Fine Arts Building (on Catlin Avenue), on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus. The event is free and the public is invited.

The contest theme this year is, "Why is it important to support the Arts in the Northland?" Scholarships are provided by grants from Minnesota Power (Allete), Thrivent Financial Services, Northland Foundation, Duluth Rotary Club, Madeline Island Ferry, and Lake Country Power.
