Two of the three young adults arrested for burglarizing two Cloquet homes in July have been sentenced in Carlton County District Court.

Scanlon resident Mallory Patricia Swanstrom, 20, Esko resident Devin Brady Haglund, 18, and Chad Patrick Staton, 18, each pleaded guilty to two counts of felony burglary for invading two homes while their owners and families slept. All had three charges of felony theft dismissed as part of plea agreements.

Swanstrom, who has prior convictions for driving while intoxicated, underage drinking and a recent felony burglary, was sentenced last week to five years in prison, all of which were suspended. She will serve one year in Carlton County Jail and will be on supervised probation for five years. Swanstrom was also ordered to complete chemical dependency treatment and pay joint restitution of over $1,500 with her co-defendants. She is to have no contact with the victims.

Haglund, a first-time offender, was sentenced Monday. He will serve nine months in the Northeast Regional Correctional Center and five years of supervised probation. He must participate in chemical dependency treatment, pay the joint restitution and write a letter of apology to the families.

Staton's sentencing is set for Wednesday, Oct. 7. As a juvenile, he made national news after throwing cold water on vulnerable Cloquet nursing home residents. In May 2007, Staton pleaded guilty to felony stalking and was sentenced in Carlton County Court to three years at a residential treatment program / juvenile correction facility.

On July 6, Staton, Swanstrom and Haglund reportedly entered and took electronic equipment, a purse, bicycles and a mini-van from two homes in the Erickson Acres neighborhood of Cloquet.

Police later learned that the suspects had used a stolen check card to purchase gas for the stolen van in Forest Lake, Minn., and two of them were caught on videotape.
