The Northland Foundation will receive an $879,000 federal grant, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., announced today.

The foundation also will contribute money, meaning $1.1 million will be available to assist nonprofit organizations helping people in need.

The grant "will build the capacity of nonprofit social service organizations, leaving them better equipped to assist people across the region who are struggling to overcome economic challenges," foundation president Tom Renier said in a news release.

Created in 1986 by the McKnight Foundation, the Northland Foundation is a regional foundation serving communities in Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis Counties. It provides grants to nonprofit organizations in the region, operates the KIDS PLUS program and provides financial assistance to small- and medium-sized businesses.
