Nine candidates to square off for District 4 commissioner post

As the filing period for elected office drew to a close on Tuesday, three more candidates filed for the District 4 commissioner position in Carlton County, bringing the field to nine.

As the filing period for elected office drew to a close on Tuesday, three more candidates filed for the District 4 commissioner position in Carlton County, bringing the field to nine.

Joining the previously announced candidates for the District 4 post were Kerrick Johnson of Carlton, Robert Olean of Twin Lakes Township and Susan Zmyslony of Moose Lake.

Filing earlier for the District 4 seat were Jennifer Chmielewski of Blackhoof Township, Dana Miletich of Barnum, Melvin Omer of Carlton, Tony Sheda of Wrenshall, Paul Vernon of Carlton and Kelly Zink of Twin Lakes Township.

The District 4 seat has been held for the past 19 years by Gordon Aanerud, who plans to step down at the end of this term.

In other final county filings, running unopposed will be Marv Bodie for District 2 commissioner; Paul Gassert for county auditor/treasurer; Kelly Lake for sheriff; Thomas Pertler for attorney; Ricard Puumala for coroner; James Nynas for Soil and Water Conservation supervisor in District 2; and Hubert Loy for Soil and Water Conservation supervisor in District 3.

Pam Coughlin Hall and Kim Samuelson will square off for Soil and Water Conservation supervisor in District 4.

Filing unopposed for office in the city of Cloquet were: Bruce Ahlgren, mayor; David Manderfeld, Ward 1; David Bjerkness, Ward 2; and Roger Maki, Ward 3. Herb Johnson, long-time councilor in Ward 3, decided not to file for re-election.

Cloquet School Board, which was the only school district in the county electing to run a primary election, had seven candidates file for the three open at-large seats. Candidates include incumbents Sandra Crowley, Ron Gittings and Rose Scheuer and challengers David Battaglia, Sam Bolling, Dan Danielson and Tracy Vargason. All are for four-year terms.

Among other cities in the county, most will have a mayor and two council seats open this year. Filing for office for those posts will take place Aug 3-17.
