The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension issued a missing person's alert for Cloquet resident Dakotah Jayde Abramowski on Feb. 19.
He was last seen in Cloquet on Jan. 5. Abramowski, whose 21st birthday was Feb. 26, is 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, has hazel eyes and brown hair, and was wearing dark clothes.
According to Cloquet Police Commander Derek Randall, Cloquet and Fond du Lac police departments searched several areas of interest on foot and with snowmobiles in February.
"We continue to talk and interview people and follow up on leads as they occur," Randall said.
The independent group Gitchigumi Scouts organized a search Monday, March 25, in Cloquet, according to their Facebook page. The group searched the wooded area around Sunnyside Estates Mobile Home Park from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A few people continued the search until sunset.
"It's been a total nightmare," Dakotah's mother, Renee Abromowski said. "I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I try to stay busy as much as I can, but to lose your child ..."
Renee paused a moment as she recalled the last time she saw her son in the small, immaculately clean apartment they share. Her dark eyes were sad.
She said Dakotah left with friends Jan. 5 and came back home late that night. Renee suspected he was high on drugs when he came back. He said he was hungry, so she fed him.
She heard him talking to people in the hallway of the apartment building, then he abruptly left. She said she doesn't believe her son has any reason he would want to disappear.
"I just worry and worry," Renee said. She said he always stays in contact with either her or his only sibling, Tiffany, who lives in North Dakota. She doesn't believe he has a cellphone with him.
Renee said there haven't been any sightings of her son and nobody has heard from him since he went missing.
"The Gitchigumi Scouts from Fond du Lac (a group that searches for missing and murdered indigenous women and relatives in the Twin Ports and on the reservation) have been out searching every day since early March," Renee said. She said the scouts followed up on tips of possible sightings of her son.
Renee tries to keep positive that he will be found.
"I just want him to come home to me and his sister," Renee said. "We're so worried about him."
There is a GoFundMe site to raise money to bring Tiffany back to Minnesota to be with her mother.
