ML-WR goes 2-1 in Rebel Invitational

Moose Lake-Willow River went 2-1 in the Rebel Invitational Basketball Tournament last week. The Rebels opened with a 63-60 loss to Pine City, rebounded to defeat Maranatha Academy 58-82 on Thursday and beat Hinckley-Finlayson 51-44 on Saturday.

Against the Dragons on Wednesday the Rebels trailed by three points, 30-27, at the half, but then outscored Pine City 31-28 in the second half to push the game to overtime. Pine City outscored the Rebels 5-2 in the extra session to take the opening game of the tourney.

Joe Bednar led ML-WR with a huge 27-point night, Nate Zuk recorded 13, Jim Mach added nine, Travis Wagers finished with five, and Taylor Davis, Matt Gunderson and Brian Bothwell all added a pair of points.

Clay Fisher led the Dragons with 21 points while Andrew Lutz scored 11, Derek Arnsdorf had 12, and Mark Odendahl was also in double-figure scoring with 10 points.

  • On Thursday the Rebels came back with a 58-52 victory over Maranatha Academy in a game that ML-WR led at the half by 10 points.

Bednar led the way with 14 points, it was 13 points each for Zuk and Joey Bohaty, Mach recorded 10, Wagers added five and Bothwell scored three points.
David Hanson and Alex Thomas led Maranatha with 19 and 18 points respectively.

On Saturday the Rebels capped off the tournament by beating Hinckley 51-44 behind the 18 points of Bednar, 15 points of Zuk and 10 points from Jimmy Mach.

The Rebels led just 27-26 at the half, but then pulled away in the second half to gain the victory.

Key to the Rebel victory was the ability to hit three-pointers in the game. ML-WR hit seven long-range shots while Hinckley managed just four in the game.

Also scoring for the Rebels were Wagers and Bohaty with four points each.
