The Carlton County area was well represented as post season awards were handed out in basketball over the past two weeks. Two area players, Colleen McKay of Barnum and Sami Mattson of Esko, were named All-State, while Dave Burgett was named the Class AA Assistant Coach of the Year.
Burgett, who a year ago was elected to the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, received the Class AA Assistant Coach of the Year Award. The award is given annually to the coach after the state tournament is completed.
McKay and Mattson were Co-Players of the Year in the Polar League this past season with Mattson helping to lead her team back to the state tournament for the second season in a row.
McKay averaged nearly 30 points a game and was a force to be reckoned with on the inside all season, while Mattson dominated the game from the guard position both offensively and defensively.
McKay will be attending Bemidji State to play basketball and Sami Mattson will be attending Jamestown State to play softball and basketball.
