Having an annual mammogram just became more comfortable for patients at Community Memorial Hospital. All mammograms are now done with a soft, foam pad covering the metal surface of the unit creating a cushion between the patient and the machine. This pad reduces the pain women sometimes feel and it helps creates a better quality image.
Mammography technicians say they are able to get twice the compression and more tissue scanned because the patients are more comfortable and experience less discomfort. They also report that the pad holds the tissue in place and that the patients are easier to position. By improving the quality of the image, there is less chance that women will be asked to return for repeat scans.
Every patient who has had a mammogram with the pad says it makes a positive difference and that they want it used during their next exam.
Another added bonus of the pads is environmental. The pads are recyclable and are processed into carpet pad after their one time use.
