DULUTH — District 7A Rep. Jennifer Schultz is running for Minnesota's 8th Congressional District, according to a statement of candidacy filed with the Federal Elections Commission on Friday.

Schultz, who earlier this month said she would not be seeking a fifth term in the Minnesota Legislature , is one of two Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidates now challenging incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber, of Hermantown.

The other is Ernest Joseph Oppegaard-Peltier III, of Bemidji, who started as a 7th Congressional District candidate, but entered the 8th District race after redistricting put him in the 8th District.

One will run in the 8th while the other has suspended his campaign to think about it.

Schultz did not respond to the News Tribune's request for comment Friday afternoon.

When asked on Wednesday about a potential run for the 8th District seat, she told the News Tribune that those were "just rumors."

"I don't have time to think about that," Schultz said Wednesday. "I think people want me to run, but I am not ... I haven't talked to anyone. I think those are just rumors. I think you can just put that to bed."

Then on Friday, she sent a news release about three press conferences scheduled Monday in Duluth, Virginia and St. Paul for "a big announcement."

Along with her statement of candidacy filed with the Federal Elections Commission, the "Jennifer Schultz Volunteer Committee" also formed, according to its statement of organization filed Friday .

Schultz, who holds a doctorate degree in economics, is a professor at the Labovitz School of Business and Economics at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Stauber's campaign responded to Schultz's news by offering: "Pete looks forward to highlighting the stark differences between Schultz’s failed socialist policies and his strong record of fighting for our way of life.”
