Zachary Daniel Mullen, 31, was taken into custody by Carlton County sheriff's deputies at approximately 11:25 p.m., according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. Mullen was reported to have walked off the grounds of the minimum/medium-security institution around 7:20 p.m.

Records show that Mullen was sentenced Aug. 1 to serve 180 days in custody for a probation violation stemming from a 2018 Carlton County conviction for felony fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance.

Mullen is now being held at the St. Louis County Jail and is expected to face a felony charge of escape from custody.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
