CLOQUET — Cori and Craig Beck's house was being taken over by their Hawaiian skincare products, and they decided it was time to open a storefront for their business.

Garden Isle Bath & Body opened at 807 Cloquet Ave., Suite. 1, on June 18.

The Becks, originally from Duluth and Cloquet, moved to Cloquet in August 2020 from Hawaii to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

"We couldn't get home to see the grandkids, so we moved back, and we were doing this out of our home," Cori said.

They had previously operated a storefront in Hawaii, but shifted solely online when they moved back to Minnesota.

Craig said he wanted the storefront, as running the online store for two years from their house was taking over the space.

"We were utilizing my entire garage for storage and two spare rooms ... so I was kind of pushing for a storefront to get everything moved out," he said.

When deciding on a location, the Becks originally looked at the Canal Park area in Duluth, but ultimately they didn't move forward with that location.

"I didn't want to drive back and forth. I did that for 60 years, and that's enough," Craig said.

Their new location allows them to store all of their product,s as well as make them in what Cori calls her factory, where she still uses a majority of ingredients from Hawaii.

Cori has been creating her own lotions, creams and bath bombs from organic ingredients for 12 years now.

She said she also developed a reef-safe sunscreen 10 years ago while still living in Hawaii made from cocoa butter and aloe vera.

"I'm sold out again, so I should make some more," she said. "After all these years it is still my number one seller."

All of the products are vegan friendly too, Cori said, as she doesn't use any animal byproducts.

"I have extremely sensitive skin, so I can't buy things off the rack because they are so full of chemicals," she said.

The store had a grand opening on June 18, with cupcakes, champagne and gift bags to those who attended. Cori said the grand opening was a big hit and people kept passing by throughout the day.

She had planned to give away 25 gift bags, but with the number of people who came through she made more and ended up giving away around 40.

"We had just a ton of people that day ... so we had a really good turnout" she said.

While Cori focuses on the creation of the products, Craig does most of the floor selling.

He isn't new to being a salesman as he had over 50 years of experience in the car business as a salesman and dealer. Cori said he has a knack for it, and even offers to guide customers by offering his arm.

"I'll say, 'Come on, walk with me,'" Craig said.

While the couple has a physical store again, they anticipate most of their business to come from online sales, as they can ship anywhere in the world.

However, the physical storefront gives them a chance to interact with customers in person again, something both they and their customers have missed.

Cori said during their grand opening, a Minnesota customer who shopped at their store in Hawaii drove 300 miles round trip to visit the new location.

While the primary focus is Hawaiian products, Cori said they have created a new Minnesota Rain scent. They also offer customers the ability to create custom scents.

"We have some come in and name their scents, and we add it to our list of fragrances," she said. "One of them was POG, which was very popular on the island — it's passion fruit, orange and guava."

Garden Isle Bath & Body is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
