CARLTON — The American Red Cross is assisting several families displaced in an apartment fire Friday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

Carlton County dispatch received a report of a fire at 218 Chestnut Ave. at 3:41 p.m. The caller said there was an electrical fire and smoke was coming from the second story of the multi-family apartment complex, said a news release from Sgt. Jason Warnygora of the Carlton County Sheriff's Office.

Several families were evacuated and owners of neighboring buildings were notified. All residents were accounted for, the news release said.

As many as seven units were affected by either smoke and/or water damage. The extent of the damage is being assessed. The State Fire Marshal was contacted to assist in determining the cause of the fire.

Carlton, Cloquet, Wrenshall and Esko volunteer firefighters, Carlton Ambulance, the sheriff's office and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to the scene.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
