CLOQUET — Police on Sunday, July 3, arrested a boy accused of shooting more than 10 rounds at two other boys and a car the previous night.

Occupants of a car flagged down a Cloquet police officer at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday, near Cloquet Avenue and 15th Street, reporting that someone had shot at them. The officer saw that the car was damaged by gunshots, according to a news release from the Cloquet Police Department.

Minutes before, two boys had flagged down an uninvolved woman in her car on Pinehurst Park Drive near Pinehurst Park, and told her that someone was shooting at them, the release said. When they got in the car, it was hit with bullets.

No one was struck or injured, police said.

Investigators determined that the shooter had fired more than 10 handgun rounds.

Officers on Saturday identified and took into custody a suspect described only as a juvenile male, who was taken to Arrowhead Juvenile Center pending charges of attempted second-degree homicide. Police did not identify the suspect or the occupants of the car in the release, or provide the ages of the boys.

The Carlton County Sheriff's Office and the Fond du Lac Police Department assisted at the scene.

The incident occurred on the same day a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed in Duluth . Another 17-year-old boy was arrested Sunday in that shooting.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
