CLOQUET — Churchill Elementary School in Cloquet was announced as one of 297 schools nationwide to receive the 2022 National Blue Ribbon School Award in a U.S. Department of Education news release, Friday, Sept. 16.

The Pre-K-5 school was designated as an Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing School.

The recognition is based on a school’s progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups, according to the news release.

Cloquet Superintendent Michael Cary credited his staff for making the award possible.

“This is a great honor and is well-deserved recognition for the hard work of our staff and the excellent education they provide the children of our community,” Cary shared in an email to the Pine Journal. “We are fortunate to have excellent staff and a strong culture of support for children within our district. We have great people who work hard every day, regardless of recognition.”

Churchill was among the eight schools from Minnesota to be named as a 2022 National Blue Ribbon School Award winner.

The list includes: Seven Hill Preparatory Academy in Bloomington, Lowell Elementary School in Brainerd, Maple River West Elementary School in Good Thunder, Kimberly Lane Elementary School in Plymouth, Lincoln K-8 School in Rochester, Springfield Elementary School in Springfield and Lake Middle School in Woodbury.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
