Two students from Esko School and one adult mentor from Cloquet are board members of the KIDS PLUS Youth In Philanthropy Board. They are Raleigh Goessling and Tanner Franklin, freshmen, and Sara Liimatainen, Cloquet Community Education.
The KIDS PLUS Youth In Philanthropy Board is made up of 16 student leaders and four adults from the Minnesota communities of Deer River, Cook, Grand Portage, Cloquet, Esko, Duluth, Silver Bay, Finland, Moose Lake, Sturgeon Lake and Floodwood, and the Wisconsin communities of Superior and Foxboro. The board meets four times per year to review youth-developed grant proposals and make funding recommendations. Grant awards, up to $1,000, are available to youth-serving organizations for projects that are planned and carried out by young people with the support of an adult advisor. The upcoming application deadlines are:
- Jan. 1, 2007 (Spring project funding),
- April 1, 2007 (Summer project funding),
- July 1, 2007 (Fall project funding), and
- Oct. 1, 2007 (Winter project funding).
The Northland Foundation collaborated with its long-time partner, Minnesota Power, to launch KIDS PLUS Youth In Philanthropy in 2000. This program engages young people in charitable giving while at the same time stimulating opportunities for youth to give back to their communities through service and volunteerism.
