The Stock Market Game is an interactive educational tool used in grades 4-12 to supplement subjects such as math, social studies, and business education, while fulfilling Minnesota Graduation Standards. BestPrep, a Minnesota based nonprofit, administers the program to students throughout the state to enhance economics education and financial literacy.

Student teams participating in The Stock Market Game are given a virtual $100,000 to "invest" over a 15-week period. Each team receives daily portfolio updates on their current holdings, brokerage fees, interest, and team rankings.

During the session, teachers incorporate The Stock Market Game's supporting materials into their curriculum. The students meet core educational requirements, while engaging in a simulation of how the stock market works.

According to Lisa Donnini, regional director for the Foundation for Investor Education, "The Stock Market Game program helps teachers integrate mathematics, language arts and social studies into an exciting real life curriculum. Students who participate gain an understanding of the importance of saving and investing, and the long term impact that good financial decisions will have on their own lives. BestPrep provides a very important service to teachers and students. We are pleased to partner with them to bring excellent programming to Minnesota classrooms."

A part of The Stock Market Game, students may also participate in an essay competition, InvestWrite. InvestWrite is an academic extension of SMG designed to help students sharpen critical thinking skills as they compose essays on investment related topics. The best essay from each division will be honored at an awards ceremony. The winning students at the national level receive a free trip Disney World or New York.

The spring session of The Stock Market Game will conclude with an awards ceremony at The Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center, where awards will be given to the top three teams in each division. The winning teams will also earn tickets to a Twins game where they will be honored with a VIP tour of the Metrodome before the game.
