January is National Mentoring Month

To the Editor:

January is National Mentoring Month and so the R.E.A.C.H. Program of Carlton County would like the readers to be aware that mentoring does make a positive difference in the lives of young people. You don't need a special degree or be in a certain profession or age to be a mentor. We have peers (16 years/senior high school students) and adult mentors of all ages who are involved in mentoring. In Carlton County, last year we serviced over 270 young people.

The R.E.A.C.H. Program provides mentoring in small and large groups plus one to one mentoring which is the most empowering for mentors and mentees. Living in rural areas, the need for mentors is greatly needed because of our young people being more isolated and not having the opportunity to get out and participate in activities especially if they live in a single parent household.

Mentoring is not a time consuming task if you have three to six hours a month you can do it. If you are interested in learning more about mentoring, call the R.E.A.C.H. Program, what do you have to lose?
