Cloquet native Jamie Langenbrunner was named captain of the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League on Dec. 7. Langenbrunner, a 1994 Cloquet graduate, received the honor at a warm-up session and was told of the honor by coach Brent Sutter.
Langenbrunner got a slow start this year, beginning the season on the disabled list as he recovered from an injury. But since his return, he has scored five goals and continues to lead with his signature tenacity.
In an Associated Press article regarding the captain designation, former Devils captain Scott Stevens said Langenbrunner was his choice to be the team's new captain.
Langenbrunner was originally signed by the Dallas Stars and played major junior hockey prior to being moved up to the parent club in the NHL. Along with another former Cloquet native, Derek Plante, Langenbrunner won the Stanley Cup with the Stars in the 1999 season. In March 2002, Langenbrunner was traded to New Jersey and won another Stanley Cup in 2003 with the Devils.
So far this season Langenbrunner has scored five goals and 11 assists good for 16 points in 16 games.
