Katherine "Katy" Walsh, 87, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, in Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. She was born July 4, 1920, in Chisholm, Minn., to Joseph and Frances Mihelcich. Katy graduated from Nashwauk High School in 1938. She married Robert Walsh on Sept. 21, 1940, in Nashwauk. They lived in Oliver, Wis., and in 1947 they moved to Wrenshall where they raised 13 children. She worked in the woods with her husband cutting and hauling pulp wood for more than 25 years. She also worked at Nopeming Nursing Home for 10 years. Katy was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, the Legion of Mary and the Carlton VFW Auxiliary. She loved to travel with her husband and those trips have left the family with many interesting memories.
Katy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1996; sisters, Frances Miladin and Mary Menard; brother, Nick Mihelcich; grandsons, Bradley Bartz and Connor Koski; and twin great-granddaughters, Diva and Vada Bartz.
She is survived by 12 daughters, Katherine Gottschald and Patricia Turchi, both of Duluth, Susan Walsh of Hoquiam, Wash., Joan (Richard) Christenson of Holyoke, Annette (Phil) Hazzard of Mountain Home, Idaho, Denise Borgeson of Plymouth, Renee (Dale) Bartz of Barnum, Marie Rilea and Julie Walsh, both of Cloquet, Debra Ann Walsh and Clare Koski, both of Stephenville, Texas, and Michelle Walsh of Cookeville, Tenn.; a son, Robert of Seattle; 34 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, Dec. 13, in St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton. Inurnment will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
