Barnum raced out to a 35-6 halftime lead and ended up taking a 41-20 victory at home against Nashwauk-Keewatin on Friday night.
Senior running back Erik Johnson tied a school record with six rushing touchdowns as he rushed for 256 yards on 40 carries in Barnum's third win of the season.
"Our offensive line came together against Nashwauk," said coach Kevin Haley. "We had been close in other games this season to putting together a real solid, mistake-free game where we controlled the tempo, but it was against Nashwauk-Keewatin where the athletes did come together and have one of those solid games."
Johnson scored three times in the first quarter on runs of 3, 4 and 2 yards and then he added 1-yard and 6-yard runs in the second quarter. Derek Bartz booted three extra points in the first half and Barnum cruised to a big lead.
"Our first quarter was big," explained Barnum coach Kevin Haley. "We took the ball on the opening kickoff and put together a nice six-minute drive. After we kicked off we intercepted a pass in their territory so we had a short field to play with and then we scored again."
Eric Curto scored on a pair of passes for the Spartans in the third quarter, but that was offset by the sixth touchdown of the game for Johnson.
"Erik had a great game," commented Haley. "I wanted to start a little differently offensively so we began in a different offensive set. Our goal was to run the ball and control the ball, but I did not think we would stay in the same set for the entire game."
As a team the Bombers finished with 338 rushing yards and 29 yards passing while N-K had 78 yards on the ground and 133 yards in the air.
"I am happy with how we are playing," comment Haley. "Our defense has stepped up and [is playing] solid defense. Our offense has come together well and our offensive line is playing well."
Barnum improved to 3-1 on the season.
