CROMWELL - Tom Holm's pallbearers paid tribute Monday to a man who enjoyed being with his family and friends - and who enjoyed the outdoors.

Rob Elmer, one of the six pallbearers wearing blaze orange in Holm's honor, said during his funeral he wanted people to remember all the good things Holm did in his life.

"I don't think he ever did a bad thing," Elmer said.

Holm and his longtime girlfriend, Kim Schmitz, both 53, were found dead of gunshot wounds in their rural Cromwell home Jan. 9.

Several hundred people crowded Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell on Monday afternoon and listened as Pastor Brandi Hacker offered solace.

"It's difficult to say goodbye when his death leads us to more questions than answers," she said. "Some of these questions might not be answered, and that's difficult to live with."

But Hacker also said the way Holm and Schmitz died did not overshadow their lives.

"The circumstances surrounding Tom's death - they don't get the final word," she said, referring to the afterlife.

"He's up there with people who love him," Elmer said. "I'm sure they're glad to have him."

Holm's three young nephews wrote a letter to their uncle; its reading was a bright spot during the somber occasion.

Authorities are searching for the person or persons who killed Holm and Schmitz, and no arrests have been made, Carlton County Sheriff Kelly Lake said.

"We have no suspects in custody," Lake said Monday evening. "I've got officers talking to people all over the place, following up on leads."

Those with information about the crimes can call the Carlton County Sheriff's Office at (218) 384-3236. A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest.
