The Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Vocal Ensemble and the Instrumental Ensemble will present a Holiday Music Extravaganza in the College Minitorium beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19. The student music groups will perform a variety of holiday tunes, including some classics as well as some hidden treasures of various American holiday traditions. The event is designed to be fun family entertainment and is open to the public. Admission is free.
A second part of the evening's program will be student participants in the First Nations Youth Composers premiering their string quartet compositions. Participants in the First Nations Youth Composers are a group of talented area high school students who are participating in a composer-in-residency mentorship program with Lyz Jaakola, resident composer and faculty at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. The project is funded by a grant from National Endowment for the Arts and supported by First Nations Composer Initiative, a branch of the American Composers Forum, and Cloquet Senior High School and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. The first experience for the students requires participants to compose, rehearse, and perform a string quartet of their own devising. The second experience will be in spring 2007 when the students will write for chorus and various instrumental accompaniment.
