As part of their "Second Sundays" monthly discussions, State Representative Bill and Laurie Hilty present Hesham Hussein, president of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at the J. M. Paine Memorial Presbyterian Church in Carlton.
Hesham Hussein is also the Imam of Masjid Ummat Muhammad. He founded and serves as the Chairman of Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy, an elementary charter school in Inver Grove Heights.
Hesham has worked diligently to increase understanding between Muslims and people of other faiths and has reached out to leaders of various denominations. He has delivered hundreds of presentations across the state. He is currently co-leading the "Taking Hearts" project with another co-leader from the Minnesota Council of Churches.
Hesham is a board member of the Minnesota News Council, a non-partisan media self monitoring ombudsman organization. He has tirelessly advocated for the defense of civil liberties and has met numerous local and federal law enforcement officials on civil liberties issues. He has been instrumental in the establishment of the Civil Liberties Defense Task Force, including a hotline that people can call for free or low-cost legal assistance.
Hesham is a member of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank's round table on Islamic Finance & Banking. In the past he has served as chair of the "Development of Affordable and Accessible Residences" program, which provides low-income housing in the Twin Cities.

In his presentation on "Muslims in America," Hesham will discuss the basics of Islam, the situation of Muslims in the U.S., and the view of Muslims on what is going on in the Middle East.
