Harry Ely Patterson Jr., 76, of Glenview, Ill., died of prostate cancer on July 18, 2007. Harry was born Nov. 27, 1930, in Greenville, Miss., to Madamma and Harry Ely Patterson Sr., and grew up in Cloquet. He graduated in 1953 from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., with a bachelor's degree in art. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Harry earned a second bachelor's degree in architecture in 1958 from the University of Texas in Austin. He served in project leadership positions with several prominent Chicago architectural firms, including Perkins and Will, and Skidmore Owings and Merrill. He was also principal of his own firm, Harry Patterson and Associates, for more than 25 years. Harry's entire career was devoted to the practice and study of architecture, and he continued working until six months before his death. Patterson designed the headquarters building for the Portland Cement Company and many residences, including an extensive renovation of the Edison Dick House in Lake Forest that was originally designed by the architect David Adler.

Harry is survived his wife, Jane Deuble of Glenview; his daughter, Sara of Chicago, Ill.; his son, Scott of St. Paul, Minn.; and his brother, Tom of Ogdensburg, N.Y.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Episcopal Church of St. James the Less in Northfield, Ill.
