Cloquet's Ward 3 City Councilor Dakota Koski has announced his plans to resign his seat July 1.
Koski was elected to his first term in November. He said he recently purchased a property in Ward 5 and plans to move sometime in July.
The city's bylaws don't require Koski to resign from the council until he officially moves from his current home in Ward 3. However, Koski said he wanted to give the council as much notice as possible so they can make a decision on how to fill the vacant seat as soon as possible.
The council has two options to fill the seat. It can hold a special election in the coming months or it can take applications and appoint a Ward 3 councilor.
A special election for the seat would then be held at the same time as the general election in November 2020 to complete Koski's term, which expires Dec. 31, 2022.
While Koski is stepping away from city government for the time being, he indicated he may not be done with politics.
"This is probably not the last time you'll hear from me," he said.
