Northrup fails in bid to return to FDL Band board
Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa voters rejected Vanessa Northrup’s bid to return to her former role in tribal politics Oct. 2.
Northrup finished tied for third in a 12-person special primary election to fill her old seat on the Reservation Business Committee, representing District 1 in Cloquet.
Northrup had been one of five members of the tribal council until she was voted off this summer.
Her removal opened up the seat for the special primary election Oct. 2. Northrup finished with 63 votes. Wally Dupuis (113) and Patty Petite (73) were the top two vote-getters and move on to face each other in a special general election set for Dec. 4.
There are two years remaining on the open seat’s four-year term.
In July, Northrup was the subject of a hearing which resulted in her removal from her position representing District 1.
Earlier this year, Northrup entered a diversion program through Carlton County District Court after she allegedly deposited a check intended for the tribe into her own bank account in 2016. According to court records, criminal charges were dismissed following her completion of the diversion program.
A total of 509 people voted in the special election, 78 by absentee.
