Severe wind chills greeted skiers at the Minnesota State Nordic Ski Meet on Friday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The start of the meet was delayed by nearly an hour and a half, but when all was said and done, the three skiers representing the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton ski team fared well.

"The state meet was a success for Raleigh Goessling, Matt Palmquist and Neysa Granholm," said CEC Nordic coach Shaleen Christianson. "Luckily, the meet did not get delayed any longer than it already had been."

The CEC contingent performed well in the freestyle event with Goessling sitting in 11th position, Palmquist in 26th and Granholm in 90th on the girls side.

"There was an excellent field of athletes with 116 skiers in each of the boys and girls pursuit races," mentioned Christianson. "Our CEC skiers went up against the best skiers in the state of Minnesota, including the prestigious skiers from Roseville, Burnsville and Stillwater, so we were excited to see where we compared to skiers from those areas."

By the time the classic leg of the ski race began, the temperatures dipped downward again, but it didn't appear to affect the CEC group as Goessling finished in 10th place overall, Palmquist finished 41st and Granholm ended up 97th.

"I am so happy with these skiers for making it to this level," said Christianson. "Nordic skiing can be such a demanding sport and these kids worked so hard this season, putting in at least 12 hours a week of skiing on the trails and a few more hours each week waxing and preparing their skis. The coaches and the team will really miss our seniors, Matt and Neysa, as they have been inspiring leaders to the team."

The boys race was won by Forest Lake with Joe Dubay of Andover taking individual honors. The girls race was won by Stillwater Area with Jessie Diggins of Stillwater Area winning the individual state title.
