George T. Balsness, 91, of Cromwell died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, in Villa Vista Health Care Center in Cromwell. George was born and raised in Cromwell and graduated from Cromwell High School. He worked in a CCC camp in Kabetogama near International Falls and then worked in Washington D.C. for 30 years, at the Veteran's Administration from 1941 to 1952 and then with the National Park Service from 1952 to 1971. George retired in 1971 and returned to Cromwell in 1972. George was a member of the Cromwell Senior Citizens, where he was president for 10 years. He was Senior Citizen of the Year for 1986-1987. He was also a member of the YOT (Young Old Timers) and Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. He was the sexton at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Cromwell for many years. He was a volunteer driver and delivered meals on wheels.
George was preceded in death by sisters Bernice Loucks, Lila Lundstrom, Betty Rostveit and Dorothy Chernich; and brother Bud Balsness.
George is survived by his sister Rose Zacher of Brainerd, his brother Floyd (Joyce) Balsness of Proctor, nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service in Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery in Cromwell.
