George Raynold Westerlund, 80, of Cromwell, Minn., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in Duluth, Minn. He was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Cromwell to Konsta and Ellen (Heikkila) Westerlund. George attended Cromwell High School and Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis earning a diploma as a machinist. In 1953 he married Jean Kingsley in Cromwell. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2003. During the past year and a half he shared his life with June Kingsley. They enjoyed taking many short drives together along with flower and vegetable gardening.

George was employed in the construction industry. He helped build the I-35 bridge overpass south of Cloquet, Minn., the Frank Lloyd Wright service station in Cloquet, the WLSSD facility in Duluth, and worked on many other projects in the area. George retired from construction in 1986. George also built many houses in the area. For many years George and his wife, Jean, farmed the property that had been owned by George's parents. George was a woodworking craftsman, building beautiful furniture. He also ran a wood-planing mill for many years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, the breakfast group, playing pool with the Monday Pool Club, playing cards and his favorite daily routine of taking the Finnish sauna. His day was never complete without this Finnish tradition. George and his father made two trips to Finland to visit family and his father's birth place.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents; brother, Leo Westerlund; and an infant brother.

George is survived by his sister, Margaret (Doug) Sewall of Cromwell; sister-in-law, Ann Westerlund of Minneapolis; nieces, Kathleen (Urs) Eggenschwiler of Wollerau, Switzerland, Carol Westerlund of Jarvenpaa, Finland, and Mary Ellen (Dick) Strauss of Lino Lakes; nephews, Robert (Eileen) Westerlund of Cloquet and Tommy Westerlund of St. Paul; his special friend, June Kingsley of Cromwell; one godchild, Nicole (Myles) Rowe of Ironwood, Mich.; and many other nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Saturday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service in Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Inurnment will be in Eagle Lake Cemetery in the spring.
