The Financial Aid staff at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC) is presenting a free Financial Aid Information Night at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the amphitheater and student common area on campus.

The event is designed to inform and prepare students, and parents of college students, for the federal student aid application process leading up to the 2012 fall semester.

Everyone is welcome to attend regardless of which post-secondary institution they are planning to attend. Current and new incoming Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College students and their parents are encouraged to attend. Admissions representatives, financial aid staff, and an academic advisor will be available to answer questions. Light refreshments will be provided.

"One of the best activities of our evening program will be a hands-on opportunity in our computer lab to actually complete the FAFSA, which is the primary financial aid application form every college student needs to complete," said Jenna Maki, financial literacy coordinator at FDLTCC. "We will have several staff people present to help answer questions, walk participants through the application form, and provide general expertise on all things related to financial aid."

The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid used at almost all postsecondary institution across the United States. College students must complete the FAFSA each year in order to be eligible to receive funding like grants, work study allotment, and student loans. It is important to apply for financial aid as soon as possible, and prior to the beginning of each new school year.

"Some students wait until the very last minute to complete the FAFSA that then gets the financial aid process started," said Maki. "If you know you are attending Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, or any other college, now is the time to complete and submit your FAFSA. We're offering this information night as an effort to get students started and on their way to developing a successful plan to pay for college costs."

The Financial Aid Information Night program will begin at 6:15 p.m. with a campus tour. At 6:45 p.m., students and parents will learn about financial aid and the costs of college and tuition. Participants will then have the opportunity to complete the FAFSA in a hands-on session with expert help at 7 p.m. People not seeking a campus tour are welcome to arrive at 6:45 p.m. for the general information and hands-on FAFSA completion session.

For students and parents planning to attend the Financial Aid Information Night, arriving prepared with the following information will be beneficial: completed 2011 income tax forms and W-2 forms of parents and student; if you did not file, bring documentation for the amount of income for the year; social security numbers and birth dates of the student and parents; dates of marriage, divorce and separation; amount of money in checking and savings accounts; value of investments (secondary property, stocks); amount paid in child support in 2011 (if applicable); amounts of untaxed income such as child support received, worker's compensation, and SNAP (food stamps).

Participants may also prepare prior to the event by downloading a FAFSA on the web worksheet at www.studentaid.ed.gov . Click on Tools and Resources, then click FASFA on the web worksheet. This is optional.
