The Carlton County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to rename the former Cloquet City Hall building on Cloquet Avenue during its meeting Tuesday, June 8.
The newly christened Carlton County Government Services Building houses the county coordinator’s office and the Property Management and Economic Development departments. It will soon house the County Initiatives Department, as well.
The building was purchased by Carlton County for $750,000 in 2019 after the city of Cloquet moved its administrative offices and police department to the former Members Cooperative Credit Union Building on 14th Street.
The county also spent about $350,000 remodeling the space for its own use.
County Coordinator Dennis Genereau called the county’s acquisition of the building an “outstanding deal.”

When factoring in the total cost for purchasing and remodeling the building, Carlton County paid about $68 per square foot. Typically, a government building like the former city hall building would cost between $350-400 per square foot, according to Genereau.
