Florence Olga Siimes, 90, formerly of Cloquet, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton. She was born April 9, 1916, in Thomson Township, the daughter of Matt and Olga Pykkonen. Florence was a 1935 graduate of Esko High School and she married Toivo Nieminen in 1941. Florence worked for Diamond Match for nearly 10 years, retiring in 1970. She married Onni Siimes in 1978 and for 15 years they spent a part of each year in Florida where they enjoyed visiting with other Finnish visitors to Florida and walking on the beach. Florence was a nature lover and an accomplished artist. She especially enjoyed painting birds, wildlife and flowers. Florence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet, the Esko Senior Citizens and the Esko Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Toivo Nieminen and Onni Siimes; two daughters, Judy Wenzel and Margaret Nieminen; five sisters, Ellen Stonewall, Esther Koski, Anna Peters and two infant sisters; and six brothers, Emil, Arthur, William, Andrew and Charles Pykkonen and an infant brother.

Florence is survived by her son, Thomas Nieminen of Nevada; two grandsons, Joshua and Joseph Wenzel; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 12:30 p.m. until the 1:30 p.m. funeral service in Zion Lutheran Church, Cloquet. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Inter-Faith Care Center.
