In an effort to attract more women hunters, the Carlton County Chapter Minnesota Deer Hunters Association is offering a firearm safety class in Barnum, free of charge, to the first 30 women who register.
"It's for any female age 16 and up interested in firearm safety or hunting," said instructor Mike Neault who teaches the course with his wife, Linda. "It's even for women who are afraid of guns."
The class, at Sandy Lake Baptist Church, will run Oct. 8-12 from 6-8:30 p.m. each evening with a field trial shooting day Oct. 13. Those who complete the course will be certified for firearm safety, which is a certification honored across the country, according to Neault.
Some of the topics covered include first aid, safe handling of firearms, survival, firearm care, firearm loading and unloading, proper positions for shooting and hunting ethics.
The Oct. 13 field day will include a mock hunting experience.

"It will be plenty of fun for all," Neault said.
No experience is required and those with experience who want a refresher are welcome.
