Fire destroys Perch Lake mobile home

Perch Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire early Sunday evening at the home of Richard and Lana Riegel, 2970 Jarvinen Road, in Sawyer.

Perch Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire early Sunday evening at the home of Richard and Lana Riegel, 2970 Jarvinen Road, in Sawyer.

According to fire chief Steve Olson, the fire was reported by one of the owners of the mobile home who happened to be out in the yard at the time it was discovered. No one was inside.

Perch Lake sent four units to battle the blaze, and the Cloquet and Carlton fire departments provided backup.

Olson said the south end of the structure was completely involved by the time the first crew arrived, and the home was a complete loss. Fire crews were on hand for several hours.

According to Olson, a preliminary investigation points to the origin of the fire as being in the vicinity of the stove. He indicated that cooking fires are responsible for a high percentage of structure fires and warned home owners to exercise caution when leaving a stove unattended.
