Fire destroys Barnum home, sends three to hospital and kills pets

The three were treated for smoke inhalation.

A fire destroyed a home in Barnum on Sunday, sending three people to the hospital with smoke inhalation and killing the family's pets.

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 12:16 p.m. Sunday reporting a water heater fire inside the home at 4120 County Road 6 in Barnum Township and that flames were spreading to the home.

The Barnum Fire Department, Moose Lake Police Department and Carlton County sheriff’s deputies responded to the fire and confirmed that all occupants were able to escape.

An adult male and two juveniles were transported by Mercy Hospital Ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake and treated for smoke inhalation. Their condition is unknown but is not believed to be life threatening, the sheriff's office said.

There were several pets that were inside the home and died from the fire. The structure was a total loss.

The family has been placed in contact with the American Red Cross for assistance.

The State Fire Marshal was contacted and is assisting the Carlton County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.

The Mahtowa, Moose Lake, and Kettle River Fire Departments as well as conservation officers from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources responded to the fire.
