CLOQUET - There's a new team in town. They're called the Thunder.

For the first time in school history, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has put together a club baseball team. And - while they're still ironing things out - the team looks pretty good.

The inaugural Thunder squad has been practicing indoors at the school for all of March and much of April. According to FDLTCC Athletic Director Keith Turner, there are about 15-18 guys on the team, which will only play a club-level schedule this year.

"We're really excited about it," said Turner. "At first, we weren't sure if we'd be able to field enough guys, but we've had a good turnout. They've been at it pretty hard so far."

Calvin Barr is the team's head coach.

"Cal has worked really hard to get things going," Turner said. "He's great."

Monday, the Thunder was outside for the first time, without formal uniforms even, when they challenged Mesabi Range in a doubleheader at Braun Park. And although the score wasn't kept officially, FDLTCC held their own from Turner's point of view.

"The first game was 7-7, I heard, and they lost the second," he said. "Overall, things are going well. We've got some more scrimmages set up already and Cal has been in contact with UMD and St. Scholastica as well. With this just our first year, we'll just be a club team and scrimmage teams, but definitely next year in 2012, this will be a men's varsity sport in the spring. We're looking forward to it."

FDLTCC will play again Thursday at Braun Park against Vermilion at 3 and 5 p.m., and then head to Grand Rapids Sunday to take to the diamond against Itasca.
