Esther B. (McKibbon) Korby, 86, of Scanlon died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at her home. She was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Cloquet to Fredrick and Alexandria (Pellerin) McKibbon and graduated from Carlton High School in 1938 where she was a school spelling champion. Esther was a longtime Scanlon resident and active member of Bethel Lutheran Church where she had served as Sunday school superintendent and was always willing to volunteer. Esther was a loving mother and grandmother who took great pride in caring for her family. She was an avid walker and Minnesota Twins fan who loved gardening, berry picking, snowmobiling, and playing cards at Suncrest with her "cardshark" friends.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles, in 1983; two infant grandsons, Joseph and Jon Korby; six brothers, Andrew, Billy, Clarence, Walter, Harry and Fredrick McKibbon; and one sister, Helen Johnson.

She is survived by three sons, Melvin (Judy) Korby of Scanlon, Harvey (Judy) Korby of Wrenshall, and Steven (Jan Salo) Korby of Cloquet; one daughter, Jan (Leon) Benedict of Lamberton, Minn.; two brothers, Robert McKibbon of Texas and Russell McKibbon of Cloquet; 11 grandchildren, Lee Korby, Chad Korby, Ryan Salo Korby, Andrew Salo Korby, Barney Korby, Casey Korby, Molly (Dan) Filipiak, Ann Benedict, Brian Benedict, Greg Benedict, and Jay Benedict; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet and continued Tuesday, Jan. 2, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Bethel Lutheran Church in Scanlon, officiated by the Rev. Joy Armstrong. Music was provided by Regina Roemhildt. Pallbearers were all the grandchildren. Internment services were at Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery in Esko.

Memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church, Scanlon.
