In an early season matchup of traditional Polar League powers last week, the Esko girls basketball team downed Moose Lake-Willow River 61-43.
"We had a great start to the game," said Esko coach Sue Northey. "We were able to set an early tempo of playing intense full court defense, which led to some early transition baskets."
The Eskomos took a 38-18 halftime lead as their attacking defense made things difficult for the Rebels.
"Our defensive guard play was very stellar," exclaimed Northey. "I thought we did a decent job of containing the Rebels' size."
Roz Chromy led the Eskomos with 13 points, Jamie Rust added 11 points and Amber Bergstedt finished with 10 points to all score in double digits. Also scoring for Esko were Kelli Rengo and Amber Jubie with six each, Farrah Wirtz added five and Jenna Coughlin recorded four, while Sarah Krocka, Kate Marquis and Kaycee Knutson each had a pair of points.

"Offensively we had unselfish play again," mentioned Northey. "We need to continue to work on being intense throughout the game and strive to make very offensive possession valuable."
The Rebels were led by the 11 points of Hillary Peterson and Natasha Dragiecavich, with seven each for Karley Rentz and Amanda Larson, two points for Candy Stepan and one point each for Rachel Mach, Kathryn Coil and Taryn Davis.
