Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women in America. It's an epidemic on the rise. And one former Esko resident had the opportunity to sit-face-to face with the world-renowned heart surgeon who says "the public is receiving all the wrong information about this disease."
"I've had opportunities to do some pretty cool things, but I never imagined I'd have the chance to save lives," said Todd Nordstrom, co-author of "The Cure for Heart Disease."
Nordstrom graduated from Esko High School in 1992. He attended college at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College and the University of Minnesota Duluth. He also worked as a radio personality on several Duluth radio stations after receiving his broadcast start at WKLK in Cloquet. Through the years, Nordstrom's career evolved into numerous communications mediums - leading and consulting creative teams within the advertising industry, writing speeches for state and national politicians as well as business icons, and interviewing many of the country's most renowned leaders of thought. Today, Nordstrom is the editor of a magazine, a chronic writer, and an avid marathon runner. He lives with his wife and three children in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"One day, out of the blue, I received a phone call from Dr. Dwight Lundell," said Nordstrom. "My name had been given to him by one of my former clients. Dr. Lundell asked me how much I knew about heart disease. And, when I told him that I know just about as much as the rest of the country, he asked if I would co-author a book with him - I guess knowing all the wrong information was key."
The book "The Cure for Heart Disease: Truth Will Save a Nation" exposes the real reason America faces a seemingly incurable disease and provides answers as to how heart disease can be cured and even reversed.

"Dr. Lundell chose me as his counterpart simply because I've created a career out of challenging public consensus - I'm a raging skeptic," said Nordstrom. "And that's my job within this book - become the voice of the public and demand the truth."
Nordstrom probably isn't the guy that his high school and college classmates or teachers would have predicted to write a book about a national health epidemic.
"I wasn't very studious," admitted Nordstrom. "And, let's face it, my career wasn't necessarily headed in this direction. I had built a reputation for generating attention - I had my tonsils removed during a live Duluth radio broadcast for ratings points ... and had found success writing for politicians because I was good at attacking their opponents. All of sudden I'm sitting face-to-face with Dr. Lundell, one of the most respected heart surgeons in the world. He was one of the first surgeons in the world to operate on a beating heart, and he has performed more than 5,000 open-heart surgeries. Now, he's saying that all the things we think cause heart disease - like cholesterol and a high-fat diet - aren't the real culprits at all. It's not a match you'd think would work perfectly. But, that's why he wanted me to write the book - I've built a reputation for challenging the status quo."
The Cure for Heart Disease is written in a straightforward, easy-to-understand, and conversational tone that challenges public consensus, exploits the reasons our nation faces a horrific epidemic, and provides scientific evidence how we can eliminate the only common risk factor of the disease - inflammation.
"The science in this book is powerful," said Nordstrom. I had never heard that inflammation was the cause of heart disease. The information and the opportunity have changed my life. And, I can't think of anything more rewarding than to hear that our book has saved lives."
Nordstrom added, "Dr. Lundell says that anyone who reads this book can save more lives than he ever could as a heart surgeon. Information is power - and hopefully this book will empower everyone to help cure this horrible disease."
Dr. Dwight Lundell received his M.D. degree from the first graduating class of the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Arizona Health Science Center. His cardiac and thoracic surgical training was completed at Yale University. Then, after performing more than 5,000 coronary bypass operations and being an innovative leader in his profession, Dr. Lundell came to the realization that he was merely treating symptoms - not curing heart disease. Today, he has refocused his career and passion to preventing, curing, and eliminating heart disease - once and for all. Dr. Lundell lives in Paradise Valley, Ariz.
