Esko girls tromp Hermantown 59-44

Monday night, the Esko girls picked up a big win on the local scene by defeating Hermantown 59-44 in a game the Eskomos led at the half by 12 points.

Roz Chromy lit up the scoreboard for Esko with 17 points while both Farrah Wirtz and Keely Deadrick each scored eight points, Amber Jubie pumped in seven, it was six points each for Kelli Rengo and Jamie Rust, Jenna Coughlin, Sarah Krocka and Kelsey Saralampi each scored two points and it was a point for Kaycee Knutson.

Ahna Metsa led the Hawks with 15 points and Bri Davis added 11 points.

  • After picking up an impressive win over McGregor Thursday night, the Esko girls basketball team had a chance to end the week on a positive note with a win over Virginia. Instead, the Eskomos had trouble hitting shots from the field and in the end it was enough to give the Blue Devils a 59-57 win.

"We struggled from the start and played from behind all night long," mentioned Esko coach Sue Northey. "We just had poor shooting and they were hot."
The Eskomos shot 31 percent from the field while the Blue Devils shot 50 percent - and that was enough to take the win for Virginia.

Roz Chromy had a stellar game for Esko with 17 points, while Jamie Rust and Amber Jubie scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Also scoring for the Eskomos were Keely Deadrick with eight points, Kelsey Saralampi with six, Kaycee Knutson added three and Kelli Rengo scored a pair of points.

Alexis Podpeskar led the Blue Devils with 14 points.

"We were dismal at the free-throw line in the first half, making just 6 of 14," explained Northey. "Virginia played very well and they are gaining confidence with a group of athletic girls."

Jamie Rust also had a strong game on the boards for the Eskomos with 12 rebounds.

  • On Thursday, the Eskomos throttled McGregor 89-38 in a game that was over by halftime as indicated by the 52-14 lead on the scoreboard.

Deadrick led the team with 14 points, Jubie added 11, Saralampi scored 12 and Rust added 10. Chromy helped out with nine points for Esko in the win, Knutson scored eight, it was seven points for Farrah Wirtz, Sarah Krocka and Katie Tonner. Jenna Coughlin and Julianne Carley each scored two points and it was Rengo with two points.
Hope Sorenson led the Mercs with 18 points.
