Esko-Carlton golfers fare well

The good news? The numbers for the Esko-Carlton boys golf team were up this year. The not-so-good news for the season is the players were largely young and inexperienced.

The good news? The numbers for the Esko-Carlton boys golf team were up this year. The not-so-good news for the season is the players were largely young and inexperienced.

"We had 21 boys come out for the team, which says a lot about a promise for the future," said coach Jerry Maunu.

Esko's Jack Pelletier was the most-experienced player by far, having played at the varsity level for four years.

Pelletier, who was captain of the team, advanced to the section tournament, along with junior Allen Davis from Carlton. Three others including junior Jordan Pederson, eighth-grader Mitch Carlon and seventh-grader Marc Peterson also played regularly at the varsity level. All have a lot of potential, according to Maunu, who also thanked the Cloquet Country Club for allowing the team to host a tournament and play there.

The girls team saw two golfers, ninth-grader Cori Pelletier and junior Sara Gustafson, earn spots in the section tournament. A third golfer of note was McKenzie Monahan and coach Dennis Sauter is excited about their chances for success next year.

"If they play this summer, we'd have the nucleus of a very good team," he said. "Our Captain, Sam Anderson, deserves recognition for very fine leadership for this year as well."

Team members include Allen Davis, Cody Salo, Jack Pelletier, Jasper Youngren and Mac Rykes; and Cori Pelletier, Emily Johnson, Kayla Handevidt, McKenzie Monahan and Sara Juntunen.
